HOW CAN WE USE YOUR BACTERIA AND PLANTS?
We can put any enzyme you need into the bacteria or plant of your choice. These organisms can then be used to clean up contaminated soil and groundwater in situ, without the need to remove contaminated substrates. This saves you money by eliminating transportation and disposal costs. Example application areas include:
Disaster response (e.g. oil spill)
Contaminated agricultural soil
Urban air pollution
WHAT ORGANISMS DO YOU ENGINEER?
Our approach to engineering organisms is 'less is more.' We make as few changes as possible to an organism's genome, usually by just expressing our target enzyme of interest. What are the results of these small changes? The target organism can now essentially 'eat' your contaminant, using what was once pollution to grow.
We seek to work with local microbes, plants, and potentially other organisms like algae where applicable. To do this, we isolate microbes from your contaminated site or identify plants that are already growing there. Then we use our custom platform to evolve them in the lab to eat your toxic waste. The result? Native organisms help us clean up the environment where they naturally live.
Why is harnessing native microbes and plants for remediation better? By tapping into local ecological systems, our technologies prevent the introduction of non-native organisms which could potentially become invasive.
CAN YOU JUST MAKE US ENZYMES?
Yes, we can produce bespoke enzymes and purify them on a large scale for direct application without the need for expressing your enzyme in a host. This option is more expensive than producing the enzyme in a host bacteria or plant, but can be the best solution in certain cases. Application areas include:
Sensitive habitats that cannot be remediated using traditional means (e.g. wetlands)
Water treatment facilities

HOW QUICK DO YOUR SOLUTIONS WORK?
Remediation is typically a long game. Without any treatment, it can take 100 years or more for contaminates in soil and water to naturally decay. Some contaminants, like plastics and Styrofoam, will not decay for over 1000 years without human intervention. Conventional remediation approaches take roughly 5-10 years of intensive treatment, followed by 10-20 years of monitoring. At BluumBio, we aim to cut those turnaround times in half. Our ultimate goal is to completely clean up and restore contaminated soil and ground water to less than 1ppm of a given contaminate in as little as 5 years.
